Winston Releases AIR 2 Reach Rods

The R.L. Winston Rod Co. recently released its newest lineup of fly rods. These new rods are part of the AIR 2 family, which uses Winston’s latest and most innovative graphite and resin technologies. The Reach rods are 10-foot sticks designed for trout applications. The Reach is available in a 4, 5, or 6-weight model.

While the Reach rods replace the Super 10 models (Winston’s previous lineup of long, nymphing-focused rods), the Reach series isn’t a direct follow-up. The Reach rods were designed with more versatility in mind than what the Super 10 offered. Reach rods also have a slightly faster action than the Super 10 series, according to Winston.

Winston says these Reach rods are perfect for those who demand just a bit more from their trout fishing sticks. Whether it’s some form of tight line nymphing, or throwing long rigs on stillwater, or simply reaching more pockets on your favorite freestone, the Reach rods are built to those trout fishing situations where you’re looking for “just a bit more.”

The 10′ 4-weight Reach is “purpose-built for technical presentations to selective trout,” according to Winston. This rod will throw dry flies, as well as nymphs or soft hackles, with that classic Winston feel.

The 10′ 5-weight is the all-around rod in the series, and Winston says it’s capable of throwing sinking lines, leeches, and dry flies. The 10′ 6-weight is the rod to pick if you’re consistently fishing long, heavy rigs at distance.

Each rod comes with a full-wells grip, an aluminum reel seat, and a fighting butt. The reel seats are uplocking, which is another difference between these rods and the Super 10s, which had downlocking reel seats. Every rod also has a fighting butt.

The Reach series utilizes the same NanoParticle graphite technology Winston introduced in the AIR 2 (it’s also present in the company’s Pure 2 lineup). Essentially, this new graphite allows Winston to roll blanks that are thinner, lighter, and stronger than ever before, while maintaining that touch and feel Winston is known for.

The Reach retails for $1,095 and is available immediately from your local Winston dealer.
