Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Moves Forward with New Madison River Regs

Montana’s Madison River is no stranger to crowds, over the past years, the hyper-popular river has gotten more and more crowded with anglers, guides and drift boats as fly fishing becomes more popular. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) has been promising regulations to ease crowding for years, and that plan is finally coming to fruition.

The plan is designed to ease fishing pressure on the river and allow for more equitable access by all anglers. Specifically, the new regulations will cap the number of guide trips allowed on the river per day and ban guiding on certain sections of the river.

The Madison River guiding community is pushing back hard against the regulations saying that the economic impacts of COVID-19 make this a poor time to be considering limiting their access to the river after losing several months of business.
