Sometimes the Big Ones Reel You In

A note from Jackson Bland (@madisonriverfc)

“Salmonfly season is sacred around these parts – where big foam enthusiasts sacrifice sleep and mental health for the chance at one big brown trout confidently sipping a size 4 dry fly.

After a long work day, Joe D (shop owner), Nicko (bookings manager) and Jackson (guide) hooked up the boat for an evening float in search of a bite of the proverbial apple. After a slow start, we rolled into a long shady left bank that ended up diverting off the main river and out of true salmon fly water.

The boat hugged the left bank until the last possible seconds as Nicko’s Water Walker drifted innocently past a log jam. The slow gulp off the driftwood proved that the risk was worth the reward.

Nicko came tight to the fish right as Jackson had to frantically row back into the main river. Then we witnessed a chaotic feat of athleticism as Nicko jumped overboard and overland to chase the fish down. Sometimes the big ones reel you in.”
