How to Tie: The Two Bit Hooker

In this week’s How to Tie video feature, AvidMax is here to show us how to tie the Two Bit Hooker.

Learn About This Fly:

This iconic fly, invented by Charlie Craven of Charlies Fly Box, has been a staple to any angler that values getting their flies down fast. As fun as it is to tie as it is to fish, this fly’s uniqueness was inspired by necessity and allows for tyers and anglers alike to explore new ways to construct effective flies without sacrificing looks or functionality.

The unique appeal of this fly is the double bead construction that takes the place of the traditional lead wrap, which would commonly be used to weigh down the nymph. By using this “2-bit” construction, this fly can carry more weight over a smaller surface area, thus allowing for a faster sink without sacrificing the desired taper of the body. As the final additions are made to the fly, the bead begins to disappear under the dibbing + feather wing case. The end result is a traditional-looking jig nymph that harbors a deadly secret underneath its fixings.

The reason this fly is most commonly tied with a purple color scheme is to utilize the effects the color purple presents underwater. To the angler, the fly may look out of place, understanding that there are few insects in a trout’s diet that would be that shade of purple, however, to a fish, it looks much different. The purple coloring will actually show as black, except unlike flies actually tied with black materials, the purple will offer a much more pronounced outline (especially in murky water). This allows for the fly to become much more noticeable to prowling fish, greatly increasing your chance of enticing an eat. However, in the end, it’s all about creativity and we encourage you to tie these flies in whatever color you find works best!
