How to Tie: Pablo’s Sally

In this week’s “How to Tie” video feature, Cheech from Fly Fish Food ties a stonefly that many lucky anglers will find success with, Pablo’s Sally.

Learn About This Fly:

Difficulty: Intermediate

Depending on elevation and location, you may be one of the lucky ones to have a yellow sally stonefly hatch that lasts into the summer. These flies are loved by trout and often a staple in spring dry fly boxes. Although not every river will be blessed with these hatches, it is worth research and traveling for the experience. Pablo’s Sally is a fantastic yellow sally dry fly pattern that combines synthetics and naturals to float like a cork.

Most patterns make tyers choose between naturals or synthetics for composition, but experience on the vise will allow you to combine the two in practical applications. Despite often being difficult to work with for beginners, deer hair used for legs in this fly creates great profile and buoyancy and is worth the time. Entering areas of discomfort will ultimately broaden your range of tying and Pablo’s Sally may be the perfect fly for you to take that step.

No matter how this pattern is fished, it will produce. Its buoyancy gives anglers the option of using it in a dry dropper rig for larger sizes, as well as for finicky trout when tied on the smaller side. Varying the sizes and colors allows this pattern to imitate other stoneflies and hoppers, which is perfect timing right now. Enjoy the process and productivity of this one, Pablo’s Sally is not one to snub your nose at!

I grew up fishing on the Seacoast of New Hampshire. Since 2020, I have been a part of the content team, most known for the weekly “How To Tie” series. The species I’m fortunate to call my favorite and lives in my home waters is the Striped Bass, a fish many on the East Coast of the US cherish. Whether it’s writing articles or contributing to conservation efforts, being a part of the industry and community is what makes me happiest. One thing Flylords has shown me over the years is how incredible our community is. Whether spreading our passion for the sport or conservation efforts around the world, it is a privilege to get involved in such an incredible industry.
