In this week’s “How to Tie” video feature, Lance Egan with Fly Fish Food ties one of his signature streamer patterns perfect for the fall, Egan’s Poacher.
Learn About This Fly:
Difficulty: Easy
Keeping up with the spirit of fall, we will tackle another streamer pattern this week. Modern fly tying innovation and creativity has given us the unique opportunity to fish streamers in several styles, with this fly being no exception. Trout are no strangers to leeches and other medium sized prey items, which makes them very important when filling up your fall box. Egan’s Poacher is just the jig pattern to add to your streamer collection this season and watch the success unfold.
This pattern joins a long list of simple streamers, such as the Woolly Bugger, which take minimal time on the vise but have high productivity. If you’re new to tying, take your time with the dubbing loop as this step is finicky and relatively challenging. Messing up on this pattern is not the end of the world and should still be fished if salvageable. Following the trend of simple patterns in this series, Egan’s Poacher is a fantastic example and will produce on the slowest days.
Whether you are fishing this fly as a streamer or nymph, coming prepared with several sizes and colors is your best bet for success. For nymphing, tightlining this pattern is effective for jigging up larger aggressive fish and gives you the perfect anchor, but can be fished under an indicator as well. Enjoy the process of whipping up timely batches with this one, adding your own variations along the way. Egan’s Poacher is a jig streamer every fall angler should carry in their box and fish with confidence.
