Reel of the Week: How River Chubs Build Rock Beds

A Note from Joseph Ricketts (@josephrickettsphoto):

“I wanted to showcase the diversity of life that often goes unnoticed in freshwater streams and rivers of the Southeast. The river chub is a keystone species for these environments as the mounds they build every spring support the reproductive efforts of dozens of other minnow species.

Although I was hoping to film the spawning events of those other species that utilize chub mounds, my friends and I ran into to some bad luck with weather but we were still able to capture the amazing process of the male chubs constructing their mounds.

The impact that the river chub have on these freshwater ecosystems is pretty profound, and I was happy to get to document that process and share it with so many people.”
