How to Tie: The UV Resin Minnow

In this week’s “How to Tie” video feature, Sergio Diaz ties a baitfish pattern every saltwater angler should carry in their fall fly box, the UV Resin Minnow.

Learn About This Fly:

Difficulty: Difficult

Fall is already around the corner and with it comes new opportunities on the water. Rivers and stream begin to cool down, offering more suitable conditions for trout, and migratory saltwater species begin their fall runs. In New England and the east coast of the United States, one fish begins to appear and consume the minds of many anglers, the False Albacore. Although not an easy fish to land, the UV Resin Minnow should give every saltwater fly angler the confidence to target and chase these saltwater bullets.

Like most patterns that use epoxy and resin, the actual tying steps of this fly are easy. Often, we begin running into difficulties during the application of resin, which can be messy and hard to control for novice tyers. Practice truly does make perfect with these style flies and you won’t know how to manage cure time and proper quantity until you tackle it yourself. Take your time and don’t be afraid to make mistakes with the UV Resin Minnow.

Depending on conditions, rods between 8-10wt paired with intermediate to full sinking lines are typically adequate for the job. A good reel with a strong drag system is the absolutely necessary for targeting False Albacore, as these fish will peel line off in quick runs like nothing you’ve experienced before. If your knots are flawed, they will be exposed and ruin any hope of getting a fish to hand. Prep your gear well and make sure to bring an assortment of patterns in various sizes and colors, with one needless to say being the UV Resin Minnow.

I grew up fishing on the Seacoast of New Hampshire. Since 2020, I have been a part of the content team, most known for the weekly “How To Tie” series. The species I’m fortunate to call my favorite and lives in my home waters is the Striped Bass, a fish many on the East Coast of the US cherish. Whether it’s writing articles or contributing to conservation efforts, being a part of the industry and community is what makes me happiest. One thing Flylords has shown me over the years is how incredible our community is. Whether spreading our passion for the sport or conservation efforts around the world, it is a privilege to get involved in such an incredible industry.
