How to Tie: The Thread Frenchie

In this week’s “How to Tie” video feature, Lance Egan with Umpqua Feather Merchants ties one of his staple nymph patterns, the Thread Frenchie.

Learn About This Fly:

Difficulty: Easy

Much like people, trout are creatures of habit. When it comes to diet, often times it comes down to exerting the least amount of energy for the easiest meal available. Trout will sit on the edge of currents, allowing their food to come directly to them on a conveyor belt. The equivalent of this for Americans is ordering Door Dash directly to your couch on NFL Sundays, except trout don’t have to worry about delivery fees. The Thread Frenchie is another simple pattern being added to this series and one that many fish will see as a nice easy meal any day of the week.

Tyers of any skill level will be able to master this pattern with ease. Working with UV Resin can be tricky if inexperienced but much like anything in fly tying, less is more. Make sure to experiment with colors and size on this pattern to see which combination is most effective on your local water. This is a classic batch fly so thankfully you won’t be spending all night on the vise with the Thread Frenchie, unless you want to!

Whether larger rivers or small streams, this pattern will get the job done. Depending on size, you’ll be able to use this as a point or dropper fly in a double nymph rig, or suspended under a hopper pattern in warmer times of the year. Lance Egan is an incredible angler and tyer, and often his tips and tricks are regarded as gospel in the fly fishing community. Tie up another one of Lance’s masterpieces and watch the success unfold this Fall with the Thread Frenchie!

I grew up fishing on the Seacoast of New Hampshire. Since 2020, I have been a part of the content team, most known for the weekly “How To Tie” series. The species I’m fortunate to call my favorite and lives in my home waters is the Striped Bass, a fish many on the East Coast of the US cherish. Whether it’s writing articles or contributing to conservation efforts, being a part of the industry and community is what makes me happiest. One thing Flylords has shown me over the years is how incredible our community is. Whether spreading our passion for the sport or conservation efforts around the world, it is a privilege to get involved in such an incredible industry.
