If you walk into any fly shop and ask for the best rod, someone will hand you a rod with a $1,000 sticker price. These days this is the industry standard for premium fly rods, but are they worth the money? Temple Fork Outfitters (TFO) has been building reasonably priced, performance driven rods for decades. In an effort to find out just how these rods perform we tested the TFO Solution, an affordably priced, all-around series built for everything from trout to bass.
We got our hands on the TFO 7-wt Solution Fly Rod, a prime example of a rod that falls in between reasonably priced and performance driven. It’s priced at $499 and sits in that sweet spot between budget and high-end, appealing to anglers who want serious performance without going all-in on a flagship model. I’ve fished a number of TFO rods over the years, but the Solution caught my attention for its crisp action and smooth feel. To see if it lives up to the name, I tested the 9ft 7wt out on everything from trout to carp.

The TFO Solution is a relatively new addition to the Temple Fork Outfitters lineup, launching in 2024 as a step up from their more entry-level offerings. This series is built with versatility in mind and is positioned as a performance-oriented freshwater rod at the $499 price point. The Solution series comes in 10 different configurations, which cover a broad range of applications from dry flies, heavy streamers, and even saltwater. In this review, I focused on the 9-ft 7-weight model, a rod that sits right at the crossover point between trout and light saltwater species. It features a full wells grip and a fighting butt, giving it the backbone needed for big browns, bass, carp, and even inshore redfish. The rod is constructed on a high-modulus un-sanded graphite blank with a clear coat finish and comes with a standard lifetime warranty from TFO. If you have ever owned a TFO rod than you know that working with TFO’s customer service is a pleasant breeze compared to other rod companies on the market.
How We Tested:
Admittedly, I was skeptical when I first heard that TFO had released a new premium fly rod. For me, specs and marketing claims don’t mean much until I’ve had the rod in hand, on the water, and can truly feel how the blank, components, and design choices come together. With that in mind, I set out to put the new rod through its paces, testing it across a wide range of fishing conditions to see how it really performs. In my opinion, a 7-weight fly rod is one of the most versatile tools in any angler’s quiver. If it’s built right, it should be just as capable of casting streamers to trout in the morning as it is of presenting to tailing carp in the evening.

I put this rod to the test across nearly every freshwater scenario I could find—fishing everything from small streams to large rivers, ponds, and lakes throughout western North Carolina. Throughout my time with the Solution, I encountered a wide range of weather conditions, including clear, sunny days, steady rain, and periods of strong wind. This gave me a well-rounded perspective on how the rod performs under real-world, ever-changing conditions.
On the Water Performance:
The first challenge I threw at the TFO Solution 7wt was casting streamers with intermediate sinking lines—a demanding task for any rod. The Solution handled it with confidence. Its medium-fast action managed the weight of sinking lines and larger streamers with ease, offering solid control and smooth turnover. Next came a simpler but equally important test: bass fishing. The answer here was clear—this rod gets the job done. The 7wt Solution loads beautifully with aggressive, front-tapered bass lines, making for quick, powerful, and accurate casts. When targeting bass in heavy cover, pinpoint accuracy is critical, and the Solution delivered. I was able to punch big flies into tight pockets with precision and consistency, making it a reliable tool for close-quarters bass work.

As I hopped between various bodies of water, two components of the TFO Solution immediately stood out to me. First, the REC Recoil guides. If you’ve never used a rod equipped with these, you’re missing out. I’ll admit—I’m not always gentle when shoving rods into a rod vault, and the flexibility of these guides is a game changer. Instead of bending permanently or breaking, they snap right back into place, saving both the rod and the trip. Second, the built-in hook keeper is a surprisingly valuable feature. In an era where many rod makers are removing hook keepers altogether, TFO made the smart move of integrating one into both sides of the reel seat, just below the cork. When you’re bouncing between a boat, kayak, or canoe, having a secure place to park your fly makes a big difference in staying organized and tangle-free.

The final—and easily my favorite—test I put the Solution through was the ultimate freshwater challenge, carp. Often overlooked, carp demand a precise and delicate approach, especially when they’re tailing in shallow water. The 7wt Solution, though rated as medium-fast, retains just enough finesse to make those soft, subtle presentations without spooking fish. I was able to lay out accurate casts in less than two feet of water, resulting in a few eager eats from some unsuspecting carp. But make no mistake—this rod has plenty of muscle too. I pushed the rod to its limits on a couple of fish in the mid-teens (pounds), and while I feared I might snap it, the Solution held strong and handled the pressure like a champ.
Final Thoughts:
The TFO Solution 7wt sits in a different class than ultra-premium rods, but that’s exactly the point. At $499, it offers a compelling balance of performance, versatility, and value. For anglers who want a rod capable of handling everything from trout to light saltwater without breaking the bank, the Solution delivers. It casts well at both short and long distances, has enough finesse for technical presentations, and the backbone to turn bigger fish when it counts.

While it may not have the ultra-refined finish or cutting-edge materials of more expensive rods, it’s built to fish hard, and that’s exactly what it does. The inclusion of practical features like REC Recoil guides and a built-in hook keeper shows that TFO prioritized real-world use. My only real critique is the slightly heavy swing weight, which can add fatigue during long days on the water. That said, after weeks of testing in a variety of conditions, I came away impressed with its consistency, resilience, and fishability. If you’re looking for a workhorse 7wt that can hang in demanding situations without the premium price tag, the Solution deserves serious consideration.
