Celebrating 40 Years at the Kau Tapen Lodge:

Located in the heart of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina lies the Kau Tapen Lodge from the Nervous Waters Lodge Collection. Where you can enjoy a 5-star lodging and culinary experience and fish the pristine waters of Tierra del Fuego. Each day, as you put on your waders and head out to fish, you might have a chance of catching a 20+ pound sea-run brown trout.

The lodge has a rich history in fly fishing travel, with numerous IGFA records being recorded from guests staying at Kau Tapen. The lodge was and is the first sea trout fishing lodge in Tierra del Fuego. In celebration of being in business for 40 Years, Kau Tapen has teamed up with us to giveaway a package to one lucky angler.

Fly Fishing for Sea-Run Brown Trout

Sea-run brown trout were first introduced to the rivers of Tierra del Fuego in the 1930s. Attracted by the Atlantic’s rich food supply, these fish ventured into the ocean, where they gain significant weight. Returning to freshwater to spawn, they achieved impressive sizes, much to the delight of fly fishers.

Similar to steelhead in the northern hemisphere, the anadromous browns of Tierra del Fuego have a cult-like following. Anglers worldwide schedule their trips to coincide with the peak migration. At Kau Tapen, each cast offers a chance to hook a fish over 20 pounds, with many weekly catches reaching this size.

Hooking, catching, and releasing these fish is why 90% of Kau Tapen’s clients return annually. Whether using a two-handed rod on the Grande or a single-hander on the Menendez, the fight with a sea-run brown trout is a true test of your gear and stamina. You never know what you’ll catch; it could be a fresh, silvery fish that recently returned from the ocean or a more colored fish that has been in the river system longer. Each cast holds the potential for a big fish to eat your fly.

Fly Fishing the Rio Grande

Described as the end of the earth, this island archipelago marks the southernmost extreme of the Americas. The Rio Grande, the largest watershed on Tierra del Fuego’s Isla Grande, boasts the greatest population of sea-run browns, with tens of thousands returning annually to the river system.

At Kau Tapen, fishing sessions are divided into morning and afternoon. The guides maintain excellent communication to ensure you are always fishing fresh water on the Rio Grande and the Rio Menendez, preventing fish from becoming pressured and chances for you to catch the biggest trout of your life.

The Rio Grande, a wade-fishing fishery, runs behind Kau Tapen, with each hole named and thoughtfully entered by the guides’ recommendations. When we set out to Kau Tapen some of our favorite runs included the Fernando and Pollo pools, which feature long runs and good structure on the opposite bank for holding browns. Wading the Grande and the Menendez is easy, thanks to their gravel bottoms, making movement straightforward without larger cobblestones or river rocks. And… There’s enough water to fish different runs for a week-long stay, giving you the best shot at catching a true-Rio Grande beast.

The Kau Tapen Lodge

Built in 1984, Kau Tapen Lodge has been operating for nearly 40 years, approaching its anniversary in 2025. This true five-star lodge, located just over the hills and banks of the world-famous Rio Grande, is designed for maximum comfort and easy access to the best pools. Kau Tapen Lodge accommodates up to 10 guests in en-suite single rooms to ensure privacy and comfort. We were very impressed with how clean the lodge was and how warm and welcoming their staff was. The large living room offers a cozy fireplace, a well-stocked bar, and room for everyone to share their success from their outing.

Guests have access to a selection of gear, flies, and tackle when staying at Kau Tapen. Additionally, the lodge includes a hot tub, sauna, and Finnish steam bath once you get off the water and need a little rest and relaxation.

The hospitality at Kau Tapen is exceptional. Culinary expert Sony and his team prepare every dish from scratch, ready to be served at a moment’s notice. Guests enjoy fresh pasta, fire-roasted meats like the famous Patagonian lamb, and the best steak they’ve ever eaten. The lodge’s wine selection competes on the world stage, holding a special place in Argentine culture. Our team was very impressed with all the food, the appetizers, main courses, and the dessert. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are no joke at Kau Tapen Lodge.

A mix of the world’s best guides, both local and international, merge local knowledge with world-class techniques. If you’re a beginner with a two-handed rod, the guides are passionate about teaching basic techniques to ensure your success. Fishing sessions start after 9 am, with two daily sessions from 9 am to 12 pm, followed by a five-star lunch and a potential “siesta” or nap, then back to the water from 2 pm to 7 pm. After the afternoon session, return to the lodge for dinner, welcome drinks, hot towels, ready for another incredible meal.

  1. I wanna see what the fuss is about with Argentina. Why is one week of fishing there so pricey? I really don’t understand. It’ll cost you a fraction of that to fish in Montana. Or Costa Rica.
